Australia 2012

Day 2: the Blue Mountains, Continued

Our next excursion was to take the Scenic Railway to the Megalong Valley floor. Billed as the World's Steepest Passenger Railway (with a 52-degree incline), it was once used for coal miners. Besides some mining exhibits, there was an extensive series of boardwalks through the temperate rain forest in the valley below. We rushed through about half of it, though, to avoid missing the last bus of the day back to the train station in Katoomba (miles uphill), where we used our passes to get to Leura Station. We took a second cableway from the valley back to cliffside first. After dinner in Leura, we walked to the B & B and, on the way, were able to see the Milky Way in all its glory. Both limited light pollution and altitude helped. It was a delightful way to end our second day. Just wished I had brought star charts, as I do not know what the Southern Cross looks like — nor did we want to incur international roaming charges to find out!
